Copper chloride (Cupric chloride), inorganic compound, chemical formula CuCl2. Copper chloride is a covalent compound, planar chain. It is easy to absorb moisture from the air and become a blue-green rhombic crystal dihydrate copper chloride CuCl2·2H2O. The appearance of copper chloride is yellow brown powder, soluble in water, ethanol, acetone, soluble in ammonia, slightly soluble in acetone and ethyl acetate, slightly soluble in ether. Its aqueous solution is acidic to litmus.
Copper chloride exists in nature as hydrochlorite. Copper chloride can be made by the direct combination of elemental copper and chlorine, or by the reaction of basic copper carbonate with hydrochloric acid. Commonly used as organic and inorganic reaction catalysts, mordants, insecticides, petroleum deodorization, desulfurization and fining preparations.
